Natural Hair Commentary

I love visiting the natural hair blogs! I came across this great quote while wisiting The Afroniquely You Blog. In an interview on the blog, model Nikia Phoenix, had this to say about natural hair:

"I do think natural is professional. I’ve been having this conversation with my mom lately. She’s been conditioned to think that natural hair isn’t polished. My mom keeps saying things like “you should get a few wigs so you can be more versatile” or “do you think you’re getting less work because your hair isn’t straight?” I know that she means no harm, but she brings up some interesting points. American society has black women believing that we can’t be accepted with our kinky hair. Locs and dreads are portrayed as dirty and unkept. Afros and natural curls mean you’re making a political statement. I believe that when employers see black woman with natural hair, they feel intimidated. I guess natural hair is an unofficial sign that we are not conforming to their standards of beauty."

My Life...My Flight: My Staple Hair Products (For Now :))

I’ve never had a perm, relaxer, texturizer, dye job, weave, extensions, or anything of the sort in my hair. However, I have used curling irons, flat iron, hot combs, *UPDATED: hair mascara,* and blow driers before. My hair would be considered “natural”; and it has been all my life.

My current list of staple hair products are: Shea Butter, Biotin Shampoo, Biotin Conditioner, Coconut Oil, Bronner Bros. Super Gro [SIDEBAR: No typo; it’s spelled like that] Scalp Conditioner, Cantu Shea Butter Leave-In Conditioner, Aloe Vera Juice, and Jane Carter Solution Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner.

[SIDEBAR: My mother adamantly claims she had an afro bigger than mine in the 70s. She has yet to produce the “ocular proof” to verify this though. Lol.]

Fly Hair

I purchased a few hair and "beauty" products this week. [SIDEBAR: All purchased from Black-owned businesses. I promote and support recycling the dollar within out community.]

I just got the Lorys Fruit Conditioner (pictured above) yesterday. I will be trying it out ASAP. The woman who sold it to me assured me that my natural hair would love it, and I believe her. I'll update you with a product review after I use it.

I purchased the conditioner from Kerry. She's located at:
The Flatbush Caton Vendors Market
794-814 Flatbush Avenue (Booth #39)
Brooklyn, New York 11226

Go check out her business, "O & K Enterprises." She REALLY knows her stuff when it comes to hair. [SIDEBAR: There are also a lot of other great businesses located in the Flatbush Cato Vendors Market! Check them out also.]

Fly Hair Tip: Enriched Coconut Oil

Vatika enriched coconut oil is currently my absolute favorite hair oil for conditioning treatments. It is infused with amla, henna, mehndi, brahmi, lemon oil, and rosemary oil (in addition to other natural ingredients). I use it regularly for hot oil treatments, and it leaves my hair super soft and moisterized.

Fly Hair Tip: Use Beeswax As A Curling Wax

I've been doing my own hair for most of my life. I've only had one professional stylist ever touch my hair (that was during my early teen years when I first got my hair pressed). Therefore, I have lots of experience doing my hair in a variety of styles [SIDEBAR:...As long as it doesn't involve a chemical process. I've never hasd my hair colored or relaxed.] I've accumulated some hair tricks that can rival a professional hair dresser's. Here's one:

If you apply Murray's Beeswax to you hair before curling it with a curling iron, your curls will last for a long time. After using Murray's Beeswax as a curling wax, my style has stayed until I was ready to do my hair again. This was one of my best discoveries for creating a curly style.

[SIDEBAR: I'm not particularly trying to promote one specific brand of beeswax. However, I've tried a couple of other brands and this is the one that has worked the best for me.]
