The Classics: Hazel Scott, Charles Mingus, and Rudy Nichols

Hazel Scott, Charles Mingus, and Rudy Nichols perform "Foggy Day"...Just perfect and sunny :) I love this.

[SIDEBAR: A Black History Fact: Hazel Scott was also Mrs. Adam Clayton Powell Jr.]

Fly Quotes / Happy Birthday: The Charles Mingus Edition

"You haven't been told before that you're phonies. You're here because jazz has publicity, jazz is popular. You like to associate yourself with this sort of thing. But it doesn't make you a connoisseur of the art because you follow it around. A blind man can go to an exhibiton of Picasso and Kline, and not even see their works, and comment behind dark glasses, 'Wow! They're the swingingest paintings ever, crazy!' Well, so can you. You've got your dark glasses and clogged up ears." -Charles Mingus

[SIDEBAR: I totally relate to the sentiments expressed in this quote.]

Fly Hair

I purchased a few hair and "beauty" products this week. [SIDEBAR: All purchased from Black-owned businesses. I promote and support recycling the dollar within out community.]

I just got the Lorys Fruit Conditioner (pictured above) yesterday. I will be trying it out ASAP. The woman who sold it to me assured me that my natural hair would love it, and I believe her. I'll update you with a product review after I use it.

I purchased the conditioner from Kerry. She's located at:
The Flatbush Caton Vendors Market
794-814 Flatbush Avenue (Booth #39)
Brooklyn, New York 11226

Go check out her business, "O & K Enterprises." She REALLY knows her stuff when it comes to hair. [SIDEBAR: There are also a lot of other great businesses located in the Flatbush Cato Vendors Market! Check them out also.]

The Muhammad Ali Cartoon

I came across this video on You Tube...I never knew that Muhammad Ali had a cartoon. Apparently, the animated televison show aired in the late 70s.

The “Today Is...” post is a new feature on The Get Off My Wings Blog. I was inspired to create the post after twitter deleted a multitude of my tweets. It was my practice to post positive quotes and musings, as well as thought provoking tweets on my twitter page (and it will continue to be so). However, a lot of these tweets have been inexplicably deleted from my page.

The plus side to the deletions is that they have inspired me to expand my blog and place what I would usually post on twitter right here :) [SIDEBAR: Finding the good and the great in every “obstacle.” Plus, I can use more than 140 character here :)] You can also look forward to other new features emerging in 2010, as I continue to expand this blog.

Thanks and Lots of Love.

Now for my very first “Today Is...”post:

Don’t pay attention to what the scoreboard says, be steadfast in keeping the faith. Believe in the goodness around you. Have a fly day!

Lots of Love,

Starface
