Natural Hair Commentary

I love visiting the natural hair blogs! I came across this great quote while wisiting The Afroniquely You Blog. In an interview on the blog, model Nikia Phoenix, had this to say about natural hair:

"I do think natural is professional. I’ve been having this conversation with my mom lately. She’s been conditioned to think that natural hair isn’t polished. My mom keeps saying things like “you should get a few wigs so you can be more versatile” or “do you think you’re getting less work because your hair isn’t straight?” I know that she means no harm, but she brings up some interesting points. American society has black women believing that we can’t be accepted with our kinky hair. Locs and dreads are portrayed as dirty and unkept. Afros and natural curls mean you’re making a political statement. I believe that when employers see black woman with natural hair, they feel intimidated. I guess natural hair is an unofficial sign that we are not conforming to their standards of beauty."

My Life...My Flight: Biography Reading...

I'm an avid reader of biographies (among other types of books). I like to read what people write about their life journeys. I also like to read "in between the lines" of what is written.

I am currently reading comedian Tracy Morgan's new autobiography. I was skimming it in the library, and I decided to take it out and read it.

Biographies usually have the underlying message that, "all that glitters is not gold."

Please pray for those who have encountered a bout with what is increasingly being called, "Hollyweird."

I posted the following statement as a response to one of my facebook friend's comments about being exasperated at the current phony, corrupt state of the music "industry." I decided to re-post it on this blog because I want to dedicate some time to contemplating how to make sure that history does not negatively repeat itself when it comes to the legacy of Black music:

Rapping was always the noblest most intellectual pursuit to me. I always thought that you have to be a seriously fly know-it-all to properly pull it off in this profession. However, there were no checks and balances so now the terrain is what it is. SMH...Just another possible Black culture casualty...Unless those of us who are truly pure rappers at heart rally and pull off a victory. I'm tired of the annals of history showing pure creations being tainted and destroyed.
